Hemp vs Marijuana

There is a lot of news out there about hemp and marijuana, it can be confusing to keep it all straight, especially when it comes to what is legal and what isn’t.

At Freedom Hemp Co we grow hemp exclusively.

We’ll break it down for you!

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis is a family of plants that include to main classifications, Indica and Sativa.  Marijuana and Hemp both come from the Sativa classification.

Because of this, Hemp and Marijuana do have some similar properties but are very different as well.

What are the physical differences between Hemp and Marijuana?

Marijuana plants have broad leaves, dense buds, and a short, bushy appearance.

The hemp plant leaves are skinnier and concentrated more towards the top of the plant.  They grow taller with few branches beneath its upper portion. This is an important distinction.  In many areas, there is a fear that farmers will hide marijuana plants in their legal hemp fields, that’s just not possible!

Do they both get you high?

Hemp and marijuana are both parts of the Sativa family and both contain Cannabinoids.  The two main compounds are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

THC has psychoactive properties while CBD does not.  And hemp and marijuana contain different levels of each of these

Hemp has around 0.3% or less of THC and the amount of THC in marijuana is much higher (sometimes up to 40%).  Contrast that with CBD levels which are reversed!

This is why hemp is widely legal and used in ailments that affect infants to the elderly, and even in your pets.  Also why you don’t feel psychoactive effects from Hemp CBD vs Marijuana CBD.

So what are the uses?

Marijuana is commonly used for its psychoactive properties.  It has medicinal and recreational uses.

Hemp is also used for medicinal purposes and it’s THC-free CBD products can be used for ailments ranging from anxiety to cancer to pain relief.  Because it doesn’t have psychoactive properties, it is used in all ages from babies to the elderly, and even in pets!

But that’s not all!

Industrial hemp has hundreds of uses from paper to clothing to food to oils and more!

Are Hemp and Marijuana Legal?

Laws around hemp and marijuana are changing all the time.

The recent passing of the 2018 Farm Bill legalizes hemp farming in the United States.  Previously, it was legal on a state by state basis, but interstate trade and financing were difficult.  With the approval of the bill, it will now make it easier for hemp farmers to get access to water rights, grow, harvest and get access to processors from other states.  Hemp will also be regulated by the USDA now (CBD products will still be regulated by the FDA).

With the passing of the Farm Bill, we expect hemp production will increase!

Marijuana, however, is still heavily regulated.  It is legal on a state by state basis, with more states legalizing growing and using it all the time.  At the time of this article, medical marijuana is legal in 23 states, and recreationally in 10 states.

In conclusion

Hemp and Marijuana are both parts of the cannabis sativa family but provide two different purposes.  Be sure to check on the local laws of your state before purchases, or growing either of these plants.
